Consumer Behavior on Facebook

A study by ConstantContact, finds that Facebook trumps all other social media for getting people to interact with a brand. More than half (58%) , “Like” a brand page because they are already a customer, and about as many “Like” to get discounts or promotions.

But for the most part after consumers “like” a brand, it becomes a passive activity. While 77% of consumers read the brand’s posts, the promise of using the power of social networking nets a dismal 17% interaction and even worse on the hopes of the consumer sharing the brand’s posts with their friends.

On the encouraging word, 56% of consumers said they are more likely to recommend a brand to a friend after becoming a fan on Facebook 51% of consumers said they are more likely to buy a product since becoming a fan on Facebook.

So customer loyalty and word-of-mouth are still reliable uses of Facebook branding. The key is for brands to post compelling content, tone down the sales pitch and keep the number of posts in a given period down to a minimum.
